Make Money Online Today?

I'm not sure about you but whenever I see an ad with an outrageous claim to help me "make a million dollars in the next 3 days working from home", I cringe. For 2 good reasons: first it's an obvious load of B.S., and second - I DO make good money online and it IS possible, but claims like these make people tune out and miss really good opportunities.

Are there Legitimate ways to Make Money Online?

There are legitimate programs that allow you to work from home and make money online, but be warned; the basic idea is almost always the same. You promote other peoples' products or services by way of advertising for them on the Internet.

It isn't Rocket Science

Here's how it works. When someone sees your ad and clicks on it, they are directed to the merchant site. If the person likes what they see they'll buy the product or service and you get a commission. If your ad is for a really popular item that loads of people are searching about every day on Google or Yahoo, you will get many clicks over the course of a few weeks or months. Some of these will result in sales and money in your pocket. Every week or two the merchant will deposit your commissions to your PayPal account, or often directly to your bank account. Nice eh?

How Hard is it to Work From Home?

In terms of difficulty, it isn't complicated work. If you can surf the web and place a classified ad on Craigslist you have all the basic skills to work online. But, it does take time and effort to get your business running and making money. You can't sit down at your computer, install a program or post an ad and then immediately have money pouring into your account (if you actually find something like these please phone me immediately!).

Think about it this way. In a traditional job where someone else pays you for your time, you work for 8 hours and get paid. Work another 8 hours and get paid. The cycle is: work, pay, work, pay, work, pay, etc. If you stop working you stop getting paid. However, with an online business this traditional scenario is turned completely upside down. You now get paid for results, not your time. You set up your business over a few days or weeks and start getting traffic to your ads or websites, and then commissions begin coming in. The cycle is: work, pay, pay, pay, pay, work, pay, pay, pay, pay, etc.

The best part of this type of online business is that if you take a few days off or go on a vacation, your business continues running and making you money! How cool is that? This is a very foreign concept to most people, since we are conditioned to believe that the only good job is one where someone who owns a business pays us for our time.

Personally, I would rather own my own business and get paid for my results any day! Similarly, there is a popular saying: "Would you rather benefit from 100% of your own efforts, or 1% of the efforts of 100 other people?".

How Long Before I REALLY Get Paid?

You need people to click on your ads and view your web page to get paid; this is where the rubber meets the road. You can approach your online business 2 basic ways.

First, you can "pay" for people to click on your ads - this is referred to as pay-per-click advertising in the biz, PPC for short. The general idea is that you write ads for your affiliate programs and run them on Google or Yahoo. Many people will click on your ads and go to the web page; some of these will buy. Your commissions minus your ad costs equals your net income. This first method can be done with a small time investment and results can actually begin within a few short hours!

Second, you can grow "organic" traffic to your website, which promotes an affiliate program. You do this by increasing the rank of your website so that it appears in the first or second page of search results on Google. This makes your page more visible and you will get more people visiting (and buying from the merchant). This second method takes much more time and can be done mostly for free. Tangible results won't begin for several weeks or even months with this method.

I strongly suggest a combined approach, using PPC to drive traffic and get sales right away, while you build up your page ranking and get free traffic to your site over time. This is the approach I take with all affiliate programs that I promote.

Summary

Anyone with basic Internet browsing skills can get started making money online, and working from home. It does take time and effort to get things set up properly, but the reward is an online business that makes money around the clock, 24x7 - even when you aren't working.

You can use 2 different methods of generating traffic and getting people to buy the products or services you are promoting. PPC advertising works quickly and costs you some money, but you could make money within several hours. Increasing your page ranking works well over time and will continue to bring visitors to your ads and web pages for free.

So YES, you CAN really make money online today - if you are willing to dedicate some time & a small amount of money, and get started with a program that walks you through the setup phase.
